Slat Filler Inspection System

Complete Tablet & Capsule Inspection for Slat Fillers Now an Affordable Reality

October 15, 2007 - Optel Vision, developer, manufacturer, and integrator of comprehensive packaging line inspection systems for the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmetic industries, in collaboration with Modular Packaging, designer, manufacturer, and integrator of dry line packing machines, announced today the introduction of its new Optel Vision Slat Filler Inspection System at Pack Expo, Las Vegas 2007.

Presently, most slat fillers do not have any integrated inspection systems. This lack of effective product verifications allows for incorrect product counts, as well as the introduction of incorrect or damaged products, incorrect dosages, and foreign materials into the supply chain. However, the Optel Vision Slat Filler Inspector, with its highperformance vision inspection capabilities provides slat fillers with guaranteed accurate product counts, and for the first time, additional tablet and capsule inspections and verifications.

"The need to consistently ensure the overall quality and integrity of products protects a company's product branding and more importantly, eliminates packaging problems such as undercounts, over-counts, etc.", stated Andrew Smith, Sales Engineer with Modular Packaging Systems Inc. "Given the need and the necessity for tablet and capsule inspection on slat fillers, combining Modular Packaging Systems Inc.'s experience with slat fillers and Optel Vision's experience with developing and implementing innovative inspection solutions was a natural fit in making this project a reality." The unique optical setup and vision analysis algorithms of the Optel Vision Slat Filler Inspector allows for precise tablet and capsule counts in addition to simultaneousverification of tablets' and capsules' colors, detection of foreign materials, and detection of defects, which includes broken, chipped, undersized and oversized tablets and capsules. The system also offers verification of product presence in slats after bottle filling.

"The system carries out highly accurate product inspections through the process of multiple high-speed, overlapping image acquisitions. This process reduces the parallax effect, while compensating for vibrations on the slat filler and for inconsistencies in tablet and capsule movements during funnelling. The results are high-quality product images that the system then uses to carry out real-time product analyses", stated Jean-Francois Lafortune, Director of R&D at Optel Vision. "In addition, Optel Vision's Complete Product Tracking Tool has been integrated into the system so that any bottle containing an incorrect count, a defective product, or an incorrect product is accurately tracked and ejected from the line."

The Optel Vision Slat Filler Inspector, with its integrated flexibility, is also a costeffective option for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical packaging lines that have already invested in slat fillers. The system can be easily retrofitted onto slats ranging from 16" to 40" with 6 to 20 funnels that have 1 to 30 cavities per funnel. This allows for real-time inspection speeds of up to 420 slats per min.
