Bar Code Quality Control
Why Verification
To verify a bar code symbol means to test the accuracy or correctness of the bar code in comparison to a standard. Using a scanner to read the bar code is NOT verifying. The use of a scanner is simply validating that that particular scanner was capable of reading the bar code and its data and not truly verifying the correctness against a written industry standard or specification. Thus, bar code verification programs are widely used in the interface between bar code printing and scanning technologies to maximize reliability.

FDA Rule Requires Bar Codes on Drugs and Blood to Help Reduce Errors
As part of a wide-ranging effort to improve patient safety, on Feb. 25, 2004, FDA finalized a rule requiring bar codes on the labels of thousands of human drugs and biological products. The measure aims to protect patients from preventable medication errors by helping ensure that health professionals give patients the right drugs at the appropriate dosages.

Print Quality Verification
Whatever the bar coding application, standardized bar code print quality verification is essential.
Health care bar code application guidelines from EAN.UCC and HIBCC require a minimum overall symbol print quality grade of C. This is the equivalent of 1.5 on the 0.0–4.0 numeric scale.
