WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, though it has improved a drug labeling regulation through revisions announced today, continues to ignore the fact that its rule will not guarantee patients the most accurate, up-to-date information about their medications, Public Citizen said today.

Further, in an end-run around Congress, the FDA has added to the rule a preamble designed to preempt lawsuits filed by patients under state law, potentially leaving victims of FDA-approved drugs with no remedy for any harm caused by the approved drug.

Counterfeit medicines: the silent epidemic

WHO convenes stakeholders to find global solutions to a growing health threat

15 FEBRUARY 2006 | ROME/GENEVA -- The World Health Organization (WHO) calls for immediate concrete action against the growing epidemic of counterfeit medicines. In a bid to accelerate the war on fake drugs, the agency will push for stronger global cooperation, political commitment and creative solutions at a meeting in Rome from 16 to 18 February.

WHO aims to create a global task force involving all major interested parties. The task force will focus on legislation and law enforcement, trade, risk communications and innovative technology solutions, including public-private initiatives for applying new technologies to the detection of counterfeits and technology transfer to developing countries.

India – the talk of the pharma industry

India was the pharma industry’s hot topic in 2005, reflecting the concern over its continuing influx into Western markets, according to a survey by online provider of business information for the pharma industry Piribo.

India was the most viewed subject at Piribo's online pharma industry information shop and outsourcing, particularly manufacturing and clinical trials, generated a large volume of interest.

“I am not surprised that India features so highly in the pharma exec's mind. The country's GNP is soaring and where generics was its first success in pharmaceuticals, India's top companies now rank with western pharma companies,” said Edwin Bailey, managing director of Piribo.
